An equal-weighted index is just as it sounds. Every stock in the index has the same weight, regardless of how large or small the company is. Therefore, even Apple will have the same weight (0.2%) as the smallest company that is a constituent in the S&P 500. The third variation of weighted indexes is the unweighted index. All stocks, regardless of share volumes or price, have an equal impact on the index price. The price change in the index is based on the return percentage of each component. Another way to build a stock market index is the equal-weighted method. Under this method, a company’s market cap doesn’t matter - large and small companies have the same weighting. If you invest by following an index, you buy the same securities the index holds. Whether you invest through an exchange-traded fund or through individual purchases, you'll see that some holdings do better than others. An equally weighted index holds the same dollar amount of each security, making it easy for you to track performance. The equal-weighted index fund apportions each stock in the portfolio equally. So behemoth Apple (AAPL) and smaller Stericycle (SRCL) are owned in the same proportion under an equal-weight index.
